Privacy Policy

Last updated: 12 March 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Slouch s.r.o. ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use Czech Learner at https://czech-learner.com (the "Service"). We are committed to complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and applicable EU data protection law.

1. Who We Are

The data controller is Slouch s.r.o., a company registered in the Czech Republic. If you have any questions about this policy or how we handle your data, contact us at slouch.web@gmail.com.

2. Data We Collect

We collect the following categories of personal data:

Account data: When you register, we collect your email address and a hashed password. If you register via a third-party provider, we receive basic profile information from that provider.

Learning data: We store the words you add, your review history, flashcard scores, and other in-app activity needed to operate the spaced-repetition system.

Payment data: Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your card details. We receive a record of your subscription status and transaction history from Stripe.

Usage and analytics data: We use PostHog (hosted on the EU cloud) to collect anonymised usage data — pages visited, features used, session duration, device type, and browser. PostHog sets cookies for this purpose (see Section 6).

Technical data: Standard server logs may capture your IP address, browser type, and request timestamps for security and debugging purposes.

3. Legal Basis for Processing

We rely on the following legal bases under GDPR Article 6:

Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b)): Processing your account and learning data is necessary to provide the Service you signed up for.

Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): We process analytics and technical log data to improve the Service, prevent abuse, and maintain security.

Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): Where we rely on consent (e.g. non-essential analytics cookies), you may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)): We may process data where required by applicable law or regulation.

4. How We Use Your Data

To provide and operate the Service: Managing your account, delivering personalised vocabulary review, and enabling all features.

To process payments: Verifying subscription status and managing billing via Stripe.

To improve the Service: Analysing aggregated usage patterns via PostHog to understand how features are used and where improvements are needed.

To communicate with you: Sending transactional emails (e.g. password reset, billing receipts). We will not send marketing emails without your explicit consent.

To ensure security: Detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, and unauthorised access.

5. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with the following trusted processors, under appropriate data processing agreements:

PostHog (EU Cloud): Analytics. Data is processed within the EU. PostHog's privacy policy is available at posthog.com/privacy.

Stripe: Payment processing. Stripe may process data outside the EU under Standard Contractual Clauses. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.

Hosting infrastructure: Our servers may be provided by a cloud infrastructure provider. Where data is processed outside the EEA, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place.

We may also disclose data to law enforcement or regulators where required by law.

6. Cookies

We use the following cookies:

Essential cookies: Required for the Service to function (e.g. authentication session tokens, colour scheme preference). These cannot be disabled.

Analytics cookies (PostHog): PostHog sets cookies to track sessions and user behaviour across visits. These help us understand how the Service is used. You may opt out by adjusting your browser settings or contacting us — note that this may affect some functionality.

Most browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. Refusing cookies may limit some features of the Service.

7. Data Retention

We retain your account and learning data for as long as your account is active, and for up to 30 days after deletion to allow for recovery. After that period, data is permanently deleted from our systems. Aggregated, anonymised analytics data may be retained indefinitely. Payment records are retained as required by applicable accounting and tax law (typically 7 years in the Czech Republic).

8. Your Rights

Under GDPR, you have the right to:

Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.

Rectification: Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.

Erasure ("right to be forgotten"): Request deletion of your personal data, subject to legal retention obligations.

Restriction: Ask us to restrict processing in certain circumstances.

Portability: Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.

Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Withdraw consent: Where processing is based on consent, withdraw it at any time without affecting prior lawfulness.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at slouch.web@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority — in the Czech Republic, this is the Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů (UOOU).

9. Children

The Service is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a revised "last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
